Customs Launch Tax Payment System via Net

Published by NSTP (Business)

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 10: Businessmen and companies can now pay taxes to the Royal Malaysian Customs (RMC) round-the-clock via an Internet-based payment system launched today.

Called DutyNet, the first web-based Customs duty payment service could help RMC collect RM12 billion in taxes online, said system co-developer, Dagang Net Technologies Sdn Bhd.

Customs has until now operated an electronic tax payment system known as Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). Designed by Dagang Net, the system came into being in April 1997.

EFT now handles RM1.8 billion in taxes and about 40 million electronic document transfers annually among members of its trading community of manufacturers, forwarders, shipping agents, terminal and port operators, banks, port authorities and Customs.

"DutyNet is a transformation from the EFT system onto the Internet platform," said Customs director-general Tan Sri Abdul Halil Abdul Mutalib at the launch.

"The implementation of DutyNet takes us one step closer to world-class Customs administration."

Dagang Net jointly developed DutyNet with Bumiputra-Commerce Bank Bhd.

"DutyNet will facilitate preparation and submission of Customs duty payments electronically through Dagang Net's eDeclare portal and BCB's Internet business banking portal, Bizchannel," BCB executive vice-president of business banking Abu Bakar Buyong said.
