Customs e-Trade Network Upgrade in Second Phase

Published by The Star (In Tech)

DAGANG Net Technologies Sdn Bhd, which operates the national e-trade facilitation service Sistem Maklumat Kastam-DagangNet (SMK--DagangNet), said it had completed the second phase of its technology upgrade plan.

The upgrade would create a world-class, reliable and efficient nationwide network to expedite commerce through all major air-ports and seaports in Malaysia, the company (www.dagangnet.com) said in a statement.

SMK-DagangNet currently han-dles RM1.8bi1 worth of electronic Customs duty payments and 40 mil-lion electronic document transac-tions annually, Dagang Net claimed.

The electronic cargo clearing and duty payment system, linked to the Royal Malaysian Customs Department's systems, will be upgraded over the next three years at a total cost of RM20mi1.

"Our ultimate goal is to provide our customers with a one-stop centre that offers the most reliable and widest range of e-trade facili-tation services at almost 'zero- fault' levels," said Dagang Net chief executive officer Saifol Bahri Shamlan.

The first phase of the technology upgrade focused on hardware, net-worked infrastructure and managed services.

The second phase involved upgrading the software platforms that include the messaging and database engines. The new software technology was mainly provided by Axway (www.axway.com), a global supplier of enterprise application and business-to-business integration software.

Set to go live by the end of this month, Dagang Net's new messaging and document exchange engine will be powered by Axway's Integration Broker, File Broker and Sentinel prod-ucts.

The first will help SMK-DagangNet evolve into a 24/7, fail-, safe, fault-tolerant network.

File Broker allows the secure trans-mission of data across the Internet and provides automated and inter- application dataflow management, allowing end-to-end acknowledge-ments from every partner in Dagang Net's trading community.

The Sentinel "business activity monitoring" system will monitor, supervise and track data flows, and is able to provide advanced alerts with options for standby manage-ment and automatic calls to phones, faxes or via SMS (short message ser-vice).
